Mention hypnosis and most people picture a swinging pocket watch, a theatrical "you are getting sleepy," and a volunteer on stage clucking like a chicken. It makes for great entertainment — and terrible public understanding. The reality of clinical hypnotherapy is quieter, kinder and far more useful than the myths suggest. As someone who practises hypnotherapy in Mumbai every day, I would like to gently set the record straight on the seven misconceptions I hear most often.
Myth 1: You lose control under hypnosis
This is the big one, and it is simply not true. Hypnosis is a state of focused, relaxed attention — much like being lost in a good book or a long drive home. You remain fully aware and in control the entire time. I cannot make you do anything that conflicts with your values, and you can open your eyes and end a session whenever you wish. Far from surrendering control, most clients describe feeling more centred and in command of themselves than usual.
Myth 2: Hypnotherapy is mind control
A hypnotherapist is not a puppeteer. I am a guide. The change you experience comes from your mind accepting suggestions that you have chosen because they align with what you want. If a suggestion did not serve your goals, your subconscious mind would simply set it aside. Hypnotherapy is collaborative; nothing useful happens against your will.
Hypnosis is not something done to you. It is something we do with you.
Myth 3: Only weak-minded people can be hypnotised
If anything, the opposite is true. The ability to enter hypnosis is linked to focus, imagination and intelligence — not gullibility. Most people can experience a useful hypnotic state; the main requirement is a genuine willingness to take part. Successful professionals, sceptics and creative thinkers often make excellent clients precisely because they engage so fully.
Myth 4: You might not wake up
You are never truly "asleep," so there is nothing to wake from. Hypnosis is a natural state your mind drifts in and out of every single day. If I stopped speaking, you would simply rouse on your own, much as you surface from a daydream. It is one of the safest therapeutic experiences there is.
Myth 5: Hypnotherapy is not backed by science
A growing body of research supports hypnotherapy for anxiety, stress, pain management, sleep and habit change. It is increasingly recognised within integrative healthcare as a legitimate, evidence-informed approach. Good clinical hypnotherapy is not mysticism — it is a structured way of working with how attention, suggestion and the subconscious mind shape behaviour.
What the evidence points to
- Meaningful relief from anxiety and everyday stress responses.
- Support for changing entrenched habits such as smoking and overeating.
- Improved sleep quality by calming an overactive mind.
- Better emotional regulation and a steadier sense of confidence.
Myth 6: One session will fix everything
Hypnotherapy can work surprisingly quickly, but it is not a single magic wave. Lasting change usually unfolds over a short, focused series of sessions, each building on the last. After an initial consultation I design a realistic, personalised plan. Many clients feel a genuine shift within the first few visits, with deeper patterns settling over a handful more.
Myth 7: It only works if you "believe" in it
You do not need blind faith — you need openness. Plenty of my most successful clients arrived politely sceptical. What matters is your readiness to participate and your honesty about what you want to change. Curiosity is more than enough to begin. Belief tends to follow experience, not the other way around.
So what actually happens in a session?
- We talk openly about what you are facing and what you hope to change.
- I guide you into a calm, relaxed, focused state at your own pace.
- Together we gently update the subconscious patterns behind the issue.
- You return to full alertness feeling rested, clear and entirely yourself.
That is the whole, unglamorous, genuinely helpful truth of it. If the myths have been quietly holding you back, I hope this clears the air. You can read more about my approach and training or explore the conditions I work with whenever you are ready.
Curiosity is a wonderful place to start. If you have questions of your own, I would be glad to answer them in a relaxed, no-pressure conversation. Book a consultation with Vibha Jain and discover what hypnotherapy really feels like — calm, safe and entirely in your control.
